The 2021 CRx10 Challenge is the third edition of a national contest that invites people to enjoy the natural beauty of Costa Rica by promoting visits to protected areas. The contest positions protected areas and the conservation of their ecosystems, while inviting groups of people to enjoy the tourist offerings throughout the national territory while solving challenges.
For this edition, the COVID-19 pandemic was a determining factor. The 2021 CRx10 Challenge had a special focus on responsible visitation to protected areas, compliance with health protocols defined by the authorities, and the economic reactivation of communities surrounding protected areas.
The popularity of the contest in such uncertain times was positively unexpected: one thousand teams registered in less than 48 hours to be part of the 2021 CRx10 Challenge. The collaboration with the Ministry of Environment and Energy and the National System of Conservation Areas was vital for the protected areas that joined the Challenge to have the capacity to receive the visiting teams and facilitate the completion of the challenges.
Results
Solving the challenges was limited to the health norms established by the protected areas: the use of masks in common areas and hand washing before entering the park.
In addition, the National Bank, as a strategic partner, supported the promotion of economic reactivation: the teams had to visit the protected areas and contribute economically to the reactivation of nearby communities by consuming locally.
In social networks, the teams shared content of their visits, their support to local enterprises, and helped create the official playlist of the 2021 CRx10 Challenge: more than 30 hours of varied music to go for a walk through our national parks.
